Time to ride! CPEI-sanctioned riding clubs are starting up this month, including the newest addition, Ted’s Bicycle Studio - Let’s Ride!, with participants of one of their first gravel rides pictured above.

Upcoming Cycling Events

Our first HopOn Bikefests of the year (for kids aged 6-13) took place on Saturday in Cornwall and Charlottetown, with nearly 75 kids participating! Thanks to our amazing instructors, the Town of Cornwall, City of Charlottetown and Ted’s Bicycle Studio for making it such a fun day for everyone!

It’s not too late to join one of our upcoming 4-session HopOn courses:

Brackley Commons on Wednesday evenings starting May 8th (in partnership with Bike Friendly Communities)
Cornwall Town Hall on Saturday mornings starting May 11th
Charlottetown’s Victoria Park on Saturday afternoons starting on May 11th.

These games-based cycling skills courses are the perfect way for kids to take their cycling skills to the next level while never ceasing to have fun!

Mother’s Day Time Trial - Sat, May 11

An Early favorite for Cyclists and Triathletes, the Mother’s Day Time Trial is being held Saturday, May 11th at 9am starting and finishing at Bluefield High School. This event is back after a short absence and is known as the rust remover being the first event after a long winter. This event is designed to get people back on the bike and thinking about cycling and Triathlon. The 19km loop course is designed for all abilities.

Summerside Muckraker: Sunday, May 12

Join us at Summerside’s Rotary Park for the first MTB cross country race of the season - not only in PEI but in the Maritimes!

There will be an 10:00am start time for U15 and under, with U17 and above category starts beginning at 11am. Check-in for the race opens at 9:30am.

Advance registration required - see www.cyclingpei.org/events/muckraker2024. Book early and save!

Note: In case of rain, the race will be rescheduled to Sunday, May 19th.

Terry Fox Ride of Hope:
PEI Gravel Edition!
Sunday, June 23

Cycling PEI is pleased to host Prince Edward Island’s first (Gravel) Ride of Hope, Sunday June 23 at 10am.

Get ready for a fantastic morning of riding, local heritage and great company in support of the Terry Fox Foundation and raising funds for cancer research.

We welcome riders of all levels and abilities to join us.

Two routes will depart from the historic Sir Andrew MacPhail House: a 20km or 35km (or less) Confederation Trail, and a 65km multi-surface route including two heritage roads!

Rigid Riders now open for General Registration!

Cycling PEI’s flagship Rigid Riders All-Ages Mountain Bike Skills Club is now open for general registration at https://ccnbikes.com/#!/events/rigidriders2024

This year, in addition to the Rigid Riders Brookvale program now in its 21st year, we are starting a new, smaller Rigid Riders Glasgow Hills program geared to novice cyclists! This program will be limited to 40 participants, and the first four weeks of the program will consist of the games-based HopOn Cycling Skills curriculum taught by our awesome HopOn instructors.

Parents of children enrolled in the Glasgow Hills program will have the option of joining in the fun with the kids, going on a group or solo ride of the trails, playing a round of golf, or simply dining (Thursday evening are Pasta Nights!) or relaxing at Piper's Restaurant & Patio with its beautiful views overlooking the surrounding countryside!

Rigid Riders Brookvale will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8pm starting June 4th, with an Orientation and Rider Assessment Day on Sunday afternoon, May 26th.

Rigid Riders Glasgow Hills will meet Thursday evenings from 6:30-8pm starting June 27th.

SEEKING: Bike-fitting volunteers to work with the Brain Injury Association of PEI

The Brain Injury Association of PEI is embarking on a program to go into some schools in the Charlottetown area to do presentations on the proper fitting of helmets, and are seeking volunteers to help!

Cycling Community Events

Hike + Bike for Hospice PEI is their main fundraising event every spring. This year they are putting on a hybrid event - virtually and in-person!

Hike for Hospice is a national movement in Canada to build awareness of the need for hospice palliative care as well as to raise the much-needed funds to provide these services to Canadians.

This year, as a participant for Hike & Bike for Hospice PEI, we are encouraging you to Hike in any way that you enjoy. Do it on your own schedule and at your own pace anytime between May 5th and June 9th.

Announcing the recipients of the 2024 Gran Fond Small Grants!

Did you know that, even though the PEI Gran Fondo only lasts three days each year, it has much more lasting impacts locally?

For every year that the Gran Fondo generates a surplus, the organization allocates surplus funds to community initiatives in support of Youth Cycling and Cyclist Safety on Prince Edward Island.

This year for the first time, Gran Fondo PEI decided to solicit applications publicly for "Gran Fondo Small Grants", with a total of $5000 available for qualifying initiatives.

This year's grant recipients were two local cycling organizations which have been doing incredible work in cycling advocacy, promotion and education in the Charlottetown and Summerside areas: Bike Friendly Communities and SAFE Summerside.

Bike Friendly Communities was awarded $2100 for its plan to deliver a low-cost HopOn four-week kids cycling course in the Charlottetown area, as well as to organize kids-based activities and initiatives during Bike Week (June 17-23, 2024).

SAFE Summerside was awarded $2200 for its initiative to complement its existing Bicycle Recycle Program - which provides free refurbished bikes and tune-ups to community members in need of them - with the ability to provide free cycling safety accessories such as helmets, locks and bells to its clients.

SAFE Summerside was awarded a further $700 in support of an initiative to raise awareness of the hazards to both pedestrians and cyclists at problematic intersections in the city of Summerside, by organizing a vigil-style memorial ride to commemorate people who have been killed as a result of a pedestrian or cyclist collision with a motor vehicle. This event is planned for November 17, 2024 - the World Day for Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims.

We can't wait to see the difference that these initiatives make this year, and look forward to the next round of Gran Fondo Small Grants in 2025!
