We recently received a message from Nicole Devine, an Albertan who is organizing a cross-country cycling event this spring in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters. They are looking for people to cycling parts of the ride in PEI to help raise awareness - please learn more by reading Nicole’s message below, and contact her at 7in7ultra@gmail.com to learn more or offer your support! Hello Canadian cyclists, My name is Nicole Devine. I am writing to all of you today to let me know about an epic cross country cycling event that we are building for next year in support on Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada and the affiliate chapters. We are looking for people to cycle parts of the ride to help raise awareness for this very important organization. I’m also in need of validation from people closer to the below noted stops that the roads are cyclable. I would appreciate alternative routes within each section if there are issues. I would like to give you a bit of the back story first. My husband Matt Devine and I built a charity event in February of this year to benefit The Rainbow Society of Alberta, who grant wishes for children with chronic or life threatening illnesses in Alberta. We were simply 2 people sitting on our sofa in February talking about purpose and how it changes as we move through life. We really had no idea what could be accomplished. Ultimately my husband ran 7 marathons in 7 consecutive days…..300 kms from Jasper to Canmore, through the punishing Canadian Rockies. We exceeded more than our goal of $50,000. Matt’s back story made this more impressive, as 15 years previously he was a drinking, smoking, 260 lb man. At 55 he is now in the fittest and healthiest shape of his life. During this event we shouldered almost all of the expenses on our own. We received a fair bit of media attention building up to June 21st. We are now looking to build a movement that has 2 outcomes. First, we want to continue to bring attention to causes that support the betterment of children, as they are our country’s future employees and leaders and second, encourage people across our great country to take on their own transformations and then pay it forward. With that in mind, we have built our next event, beginning in May of 2023. Matt will cycle across Canada….about 12,500+ kms….not for time or in a simple coast to coast fashion. We will be going from Halifax to Victoria, then north to both Yukon and NT, before finishing in our home city of Edmonton, Alberta. We will be raising awareness, funds and new mentors for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Currently the wait time for children to be matched with a mentor is 3-8 yrs (varies by location) and that is unacceptable. We look forward to the day when it’s mentors and not “littles” that are waiting for a match. Children who have a mentor are far more likely to finish school, less likely to be involved with law enforcement and more likely than the general population to then give back to their communities. Our original fundraiser event build up and the actual event was documented on both my and Matt’s Instagram pages (Matt’s has the most information @devinetransformation) as well as Matt’s LinkedIn page….links are below. We were also interviewed by both the Edmonton and Calgary Global morning news shows before and during the event, as well as a larger interview by John Sexsmith of Global Edmonton. Those interviews are attached in our social media sites. We had a production company do our video launch for this next event as per attached. They are also looking at doing a documentary of the event that will feature our sponsors as well. If 2 people can do what was done in 3.5 months, imagine what we can do on a larger scale with a larger network of strong community focused organizations and individuals. I am also in need of connections in or close to the below areas that include: Bike fitters, bike mechanics, bike equipment/parts suppliers (in the event of required maintenance and repairs). Physiotherapists and massage therapists would also be helpful. I’m not asking for you to intervene for me…….Unless you want to get involved that way. I will take any support I can get. If this email can be shared with your individual groups I would be very appreciative, as I said, I need all the help I can get. They can then email me directly at 7in7ultra@gmail.com. Do not “reply to all” as there are a clot of recipients on this email and I do not want to anger anyone. We start May 20, 2023 in Halifax. The rest of the stops are listed below Truro, Charlottetown, Moncton, Fredricton, Woodstock, Edmunston, Kamourska, Quebec City, Trois Rivière, Montreal, Cornwall, Kingston, Coburg, Toronto, Barrie, Pointe au Basil, Sudbury, Blind River, Sault Ste Marie, Wawa, Marathon, Nipigon, Thunder Bay, Martin, Whiteshell, Winnipeg, Treherne, Brandon, Moosomin, Candiac, Regina, Moose Jaw, Assiniboia, Cadillac, Piapot, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Pincher Creek, Sparwood, Cranbrook, Creston, Castlegar, Grand Forks, Osoyoos, Princeton, Hope, Abbotsford, Vancouver, Victoria, Squamish, Pemberton, Lillooet, Clinton, Williams Lake, Quesnel, Prince George, Vanderhoof, Sheraton, Smithers, New Hazelton, Meziaden Junction, Iskut, Dease Lake, Jade City, Watson Lake, Swift River, Johnson’s Crossing, Whitehorse, Coal River Lodge, Toad River, Fort Nelson, Fort Laird, Fort Providence, Edzo, Yellowknife, Hay River, Indian Cabins, High Level, Manning, Peace River, Grande Prairie, Valleyview, Fox Creek, Mayerthorpe, Edmonton.
